This technology consists on the deposition of material layer by layer in order to build a three-dimensional object. Additive manufacturing offers great advantages over the classic manufacturing processes, from the point of view of design freedom, economic and raw material saving, or reduction of delivery times of the final products. In the last years, different technologies have been created and commercialized for the implementation of this technology.

TRANSFRON3D project will mainly approach the challenges and needs in relation to economy, employment, knowledge and innovation in the POCTEFA territory.

In recent years, it has been shown that companies with better export capacity are more capable to withstand the difficulties of the crisis. The export capacity of companies depends on the technological level of those. Within a global framework in which American and Asian companies offer high-quality products and services, it has been necessary to increase the technological capacity of companies in the cross-border space in order to be competitive.

The main technical innovation of the TRANSFRON3D project is the replacement of the classical manufacturing processes by additive manufacturing processes, to manufacture metal components with high added value. This substitution allows companies to reduce their response times to the rapidly changing market needs, reducing the use of raw materials and the ability to manufacture extremely complex components.

In addition, one of the first limitations of the additive manufacturing processes is the lack of knowledge of the mechanical properties of the parts produced by this technology. The TRANSFRON3D project will face this challenge, while the improvement of processes and materials will be characterized, and prototypes will be tested and validated.

The European Commission has launched in all regions the challenge of implementing smart specialization strategies. It is needed to emphasie on the importance of concentrating financial and human resources for research and development in the most competitive sectors around the world. It is also requested that the strategy of specialization must be the result of a process of cooperation between public or private entities. In addition, the impulse will not be just «pure specialization», but a «diversified experience».
